What do we offer?
This course is ideal for keen DIY’s, Self Builders, multi-skilled trades people or people who are considering a new career in the plumbing industry, looking for a basic introduction to the plumbing industry. This course will provide you with an insight into the plumbing industry and teach you lots of new skills, working with the latest plumbing materials by John Guest speedfit, Hep2O, as well as traditional copper solder and compression fittings.
Here at Central Building & Welding Academy, the most important thing for us is that, by the end of your course, you will have learnt all of the skills required and built your confidence to start doing your own work, and to be fully proud of your personal projects. To ensure that, we employ only the best tutors: friendly & professional tradespeople who have decades of trade experience. Therefore, our tutors have up to date industry knowledge and lots of experience in training people and can pass on all of the expertise and site experience to our learners.
Providing a memorable & highly knowledgeable experience to our students is what matters most to us that is why the course has a maximum of 7 students at a time. This way, each student gets enough guidance and tuition from our tutors, allowing you to ask questions and get plenty of one-to-one instruction and ensuring that you pass the course with all the required knowledge and understanding.
You will be given your own plumbing work bay, and will be trained by an experienced plumber who will build your confidence and provide you with the professional skills & knowledge that will enable you to give a high-end, confident finish to your domestic plumbing jobs, or the first step on a career as a plumber (if you are looking to become a qualified plumber, make sure to check out our Level 2 Plumbing Qualification Course!).
Upon completion of this course, you will gain a in-house Certificate of Competence from our approved training centre.
Learning Outcomes
You will learn the trade names and how to use all plumbing tools whilst completing your training with us. Tools will include: pipe cutters, pipe bender, basin wrenches and blow torches, and more.
We will show you how to measure and how to cut copper pipe safely and accurately using industry recognised tools. You will then learn the art of soldering copper joints. This can be tricky to start with, but once you get the hang of it, it becomes tremendously satisfying, and it paves the way for you to move onto the next stage of the course.
As noted above, your tutor will demonstrate different bends typically used in plumbing. You will be given the chance to use these when you fit your bathroom suite
Your tutor will explain the clipping distances and show you how and where to fix them in your work area
You will learn how to successfully use different types of compression and plastic push fit fittings
This part of the course is a firm favourite and learning the skills to complete this task can save you money
You will be shown how to drain a heating system and how to fit a radiator. This is a typical job undertaken by a plumber on a daily basis
Usually something completed at the end of the course, you will learn how to change washers and how to repair leaking taps
Detailed Course Content
- 1. You will start off by learning how to solder copper and achieve leak free joints. You will also be shown how to use compression joints and plastic push fit fittings
Your tutor will then demonstrate how to use a pipe bender and train you to use them
- 2. Once you have mastered these basics, you will then move to the next stage, which is fitting a bathroom suite that includes a bath, basin and toilet.
Your tutor will show you how to set pipework out and how to fix pipe clips, and you will then put the knowledge you have learned into practice by first fixing all of the pipework ready for your bathroom suite. All pipework in your bay is soldered, and all valves and taps are fitted using compression fittings.
To ensure you are working under realistic conditions, your bathroom suite will be connected to the water supply and tested for leaks. Once you have tested your first fix pipes, and have plumbed in your bathroom suite, you will be shown how to test your pipework and make any necessary adjustments.
- 3. You will be taught how to connect your bathroom to soil and waste pipes in situ, which is what we have here at CBWA in order to reflect a typical real-life scenario that you may come across when fitting a bathroom suite in your own home
- 4. The next stage will include how to fix a radiator to the wall in your work bay, and then connecting valves and then pipework. Your radiator will be connected to a gravity fed system and you will learn how to fill, test and drain down the system to replicate a typical scenario that you may come across in your own home
- 5. Your tutor will also show you how to fault find on taps and traps and show you where faults can occur. You will be shown how to repair leaking and dripping taps and cover the main faults that occur with taps
