Detailed Course Content

1. This course commences with drylining, a method used by plasterers to prepare ceiling and walls using plasterboards. We will teach you two aspects of drylining:

Fixing plasterboards to ceilings and walls using mechanical fixings (clout nails)

Fixing plasterboards to a masonry background using plasterboard adhesive (dotting & dabbing)

2. You will be taught how to cut and fix finish coat beads around a window and then move onto fixing scrim tape onto the plasterboard joints

3. We will show you how to mix and then apply finish coat plaster onto the ceiling and walls that you have boarded

4. You will learn how to apply external plaster (render), a process which will be demonstrated by your tutor and completed in the following stages:

5. How to fix beading and apply the 1st scratch coat

6. Beading allows you to have a fixed edge to render up to, while the scratch coat is the 1st of two render coats (its main aim being to provide coverage, help flatten the wall and provide a key for the next coat to adhere to)

7. How to rub up the 2nd scratch coat (known as the float coat) using a plastic or wooden float to give it the desired look

Each stage of these processes will first be demonstrated by your tutor, and then you will be free to practice on your walls and ceiling.
